Fake vodka health scare

DRINKERS are warned to watch out for knock-off vodka which could pose a danger to their health.

The warning comes after Trading Standards found counterfeit 70cl bottles of Glen's vodka on sale in Chesham, Aylesbury and Downley.

Jackie Eldridge, education and information officer for Bucks Trading Standards said: "In the past counterfeit vodka has proved to be very dangerous to people's health, in some cases causing blindness and one case causing death."

Genuine Glen's vodka can be easily identified as it is only bottled in vessels supplied by Allied Glass Containers. This bottle has a small AGC logo on the base of the bottle.

The following information is also embossed in the glass around 5mm from the base: 70cl 58mm C12173.

If a 70cl bottle of Glen's does not have this information, it is a fake.

The fakes can also be recognised as they have no glue pattern on the back of their labels. Genuine Glen's labels have horizontal lines of glue 2mm apart to hold on the labels.

Bucks County Councillor Margaret Dewar said: "Public health is a major concern, people should not be put at risk by drinking unregulated alcohol.

"Shops selling counterfeit goods will be investigated by Trading standards, particularly when the health and safety of the public is compromised."

Anyone who has bought or been offered cheap Glen's Vodka should call Trading Standards on 08454 04 05 06.
