Man rescued from flat fire
FIREFIGHTERS broke into a flat in High Wycombe this afternoon to rescue a man who fell asleep while a fire started in his kitchen.
The fire service was called at 2.33pm by ground floor occupants of the block of flats in Crendon Street.
An unattended pan of food left cooking on the stove caught fire in the first floor home.
Two crews from High Wycombe Fire Station attended the scene and got the man to safety, before tackling the blaze with a hose reel.
Station manager John Bull said: "There was a smoke alarm in the flat but for some reason it was not working.
"If the fire had not been spotted earlier, the outcome could have been considerably more serious.
"This highlights the importance of carrying out a weekly check on your smoke alarm to make sure it will alert you in the event of a fire."
He urged people to make sure they had working smoke alarms installed on every level of their property.

Another drunk in charge of chip pan...
He only woke up when one of the fire fighters shook his foot whilst standing at the foot of the bed! Never heard the door going in or fire fighters tackling the fire...
