Heathrow crash pilot vindicated
HERO aeroplane pilot Captain Peter Burkill returned to work today, four months after his plane crash-landed at Heathrow.
And an internal investigation by British Airways revealed this week Capt Burkill's actions prevented a far worse accident.
The report stated the actions of the 43-year-old former Dr Challoner's Grammar School pupil helped the Boeing jet maintain its speed.
The report said Capt Burkill, who now lives with his wife and children in Worcester, changed the angles of the plane's wing flaps in order to reduce the drag on the plane.
Although the plane crash-landed just short of a runway at Heathrow Airport on January 17, the report said Capt Burkill's intervention helped the flight from Beijing clear a perimeter fence and prevent a bigger accident.
136 passengers and 16 crew were safely evacuated following the crash-landing, with one passenger suffering a broken leg.
Michael Johnson, BA Press Officer, said a final report will be released when a more extensive investigation into the accident has been completed.
