"Crocodile" through Downley for Walk to School Week
MORE than 400 Downley School pupils will get to class under their own steam this morning as they take part in Walk to School Week.
The national campaign week aims to reduce traffic congestion and pollution and get children active to tackle obesity.
On Tuesday, pupils scooted to the school in Faulkner Way, Downley.
This morning they will walk to school, holding hands in pairs to form an "Enormous Crocodile".
Parents will drop children off at the car park of the Downley Donkey pub in Plomer Green Lane at 8.15am to be escorted by teachers and police community support officers to school.

Ahh I wondered what was going on, there were tons of kids everywhere! Good though, the traffic down Plomer Hill was much better.

So they will be driven to a car park, and then walk to school.

The car park is just a convenient place for a large number of children to congregate.

No good if this is a one-off stunt. You can't get active and healthy by walking once a year. Nor will it reduce traffic congestion - the same cars will be on the road, they'll just stop off a few hundred yards down the road. This needs to happen [bold]every[/bold] school day. I hope the children are brave enough to make this a permanent thing.

Hang on, the kids tend not to get a choice if to walk or not. Shouldn't their parents be doing this, educate them. Get them out of the cars.

Andy b is correct. There are a large number of children whose parents already walk them to school.
But I don't believe this event is a stunt. It's all about teaching children the value of walking vs. driving. Having said that, only the parents who subscribe to that and teach that will instill it in their children.
But one child telling another child how they enjoyed their walk to school with mum/dad could really make a difference.
