APART from Tony Weeden, (B.Sc. (Eng.), Hons., C.Eng., M.I.Mech.E.,), I also read Hannah Williams's well balanced article, entitled "We're addicted to burning fossil fuels".
Mr Weeden writes that the article was misleading and prejudiced and also stated that it is an unproven theory that CO2 released from burning fossil fuels is the sole cause of climate change and that the sun's effect on the Earth is a possible cause.
BFP readers may be interested to know that a few weeks ago Dr Mike Lockwood published, in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society, his studies of the sun's activities since 1985. These conclusively show that solar activity has reduced over the past 20 years and could not possibly account for the recent increases in global warming.
However, it is of little consequence if we agree, or disagree, with Mr Weeden's views, because climate change is upon us! For 20 years, or more, temperatures and sea levels have been rising, seasons have been changing and weather patterns have intensified.
Mr Weeden's view is that 6.5 billion people burning fossil (and renewable) fuels are not having an effect on our planet. Well, I believe that more people, burning more fossil fuels, producing more pollution, is adding to global warming!
So, as sure as eggs is eggs, we must address these causes and reduce their adverse effects, because all the predictions are saying that our situation will get much, much worse.
As sea levels rise, even ivory towers will get washed away!
