DOCUMENTS dating back to Henry VIII's time will prevent county authorities from stopping a weekly market in Princes Risborough.
Bucks County Council, which employed experts in medieval Latin to translate the papers, now accepts that the people of the town do have a legal right to hold a market if they so wish. The documents - known as Letters Patent - date back to 1523.
At a meeting of the Princes Risborough Town Centre Forum this week, county officials revealed that the documents have been inspected by legal experts and found to be valid.
Chamber of Trade chairman, Peter Langstone said: "I'm really pleased that at long last we've got consent. We've been hoping to launch a market ever since the old one, disappeared from the sight where Tescos now stands."
